I'm a 46-year-old attorney and mother of two, with a demonstrated commitment to public service. Born in North Trenton to teenage parents, my father joined the Army to take care of us. Given my upbringing, the idea of serving my country and my community was ingrained in me from an early age.
As a teen, I navigated the challenges of having a parent who struggled with addiction and incarceration. Despite my mother's personal battles, she instilled in me the value of education and encouraged me to do well.
After graduating from Trenton Central High School, I went on to attend the University of Maryland at College Park as a Banneker-Key Scholar, becoming the first in my family to graduate from college. I earned my J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2004 and have dedicated my career to advancing equity through my work in higher education and housing and economic development.
My most recent community involvement includes serving on the boards of Greater Trenton, Princeton Human Services Commission (now CARES), Princeton Junior Football League, Princeton Middle School PTO, and Littlebrook Elementary PTO, as well as membership in Princeton Community Democratic Organization, Princeton Parents for Black Children, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jack and Jill of America, and The Links, Incorporated.
My commitment to public service is rooted in lived experience. I know firsthand how much county services matter in our everyday lives.
Long before I moved to Princeton, I used to drive my mother to work at a flower shop on Nassau Street. I remember navigating those few miles between Trenton and Princeton, looking at how different the communities were yet interconnected in so many ways. Those disparities inspired me to not only work hard to overcome adversity, but to come back and be of service to others.
The powers and responsibilities of the Board of County Commissioners include approving county contracts, reviewing and approving the budget, and adopting the administrative code, ordinances, and resolutions. My experience as a municipal attorney, higher education administrator, and governance professional leaves me well equipped to effectively carry out these duties. Given my background in the public sector, I also understand and am fully committed to the principles of transparency, integrity, and accountability.
As a Commissioner, I will take an inclusive, equitable, and multi-municipal approach to governance, focusing on:
Affordability: Fiscal responsibility and support for our most vulnerable populations.
Economic Development: Supporting small businesses and attracting new visitors and investments.
Public Transit: Addressing transportation disparity, safety, and infrastructure improvements.
Revitalization of Trenton: Working collaboratively to build a thriving Capital City.
My family has created memories across Mercer County, attending public schools, hosting special events at county venues, patronizing local businesses, playing at county parks and golf courses, and flying through the Trenton-Mercer Airport. I understand and appreciate how much Mercer County has to offer and would make it a priority to help ensure that it flourishes and is a top destination to live, work, and play.
